Do you want to be a
General Practice Nurse?

Funded by NHS England, this module is open to Registered Nurses, Nursing Associates, year 2 & 3 Student Nurses and Trainee Nursing Associates, in the Northwest, considering a career in General Practice Nursing. The content is informed by the Primary Care Nursing Career and Core Capabilities Framework and provides an opportunity to gain a better understanding of working in Primary Care/General Practice, supporting movement into this sector.
Please note: This is a non-credit bearing module.
This module is also available to study at level 6&7. This option is offered to Registered Nurses and Nursing Associates only.

Teaching & learning strategy

The module will be available to access online, providing directed study and signposting to wider reading and additional resources. It is delivered asynchronously so can be completed at a time to suit. The module content is written and delivered by Nurses expert in the field of General Practice Nursing.

There will be no formal assessment required on completion of this module, but assessment of knowledge and learning will occur throughout the module with regular test your knowledge quizzes and you will be encouraged and supported to keep a portfolio of learning and reflection which can be used to support any application for a Practice Nurse role.

Module Content

  • An introduction to Primary Care including how it fits into the wider system.
  • Operating within a Primary Care environment.
  • Communication skills.
  • Quality, diversity, and inclusion, in terms of population health management.
  • Overview of immunisations used in primary care and legal aspects including patient specific directions and patient group directions.
  • Overview of long-term conditions, including asthma, COPD, diabetes and hypertension
  • Overview/introduction to sexual health/contraception.
  • Dementia care in the community.
  • Introduction to learning disability health check

Enrolment

The module will be available to access from the 8th April 2024 and we are currently open to applications. Applications will remain open until all places have been filled. Once applications have been reviewed places will be offered on a first come first served basis. Once a place has been offered it is expected that you will activate your account and start the module within 4 weeks. Whilst the module is designed to be completed over 12 weeks, there is flexibility to study at a time that fits in around your home and work life, but must be completed by 31st January 2025.
